Most Lycra fabric problems I reject aren't caused by the elastane itself. They're caused by the fabric construction around it—the knitting tension, the yarn count, the finishing chemistry. That's why I'd rather see a test report showing stretch recovery than a spec sheet that says "Lycra" in large letters. If you're sourcing polyester viscose Lycra fabric, start by asking for recovery data and shrinkage numbers. If the supplier can't provide them, keep looking.

Most buyers focus on elastane percentage and completely miss recovery. A fabric can stretch plenty and still stay baggy after every wear. Recovery is what separates a comfortable stretch blazer from one that looks tired by 4:00 PM. For polyester viscose Lycra fabric, the typical use is dresses, trousers, and suiting. The polyester gives wrinkle resistance, the viscose gives that soft, matte surface, and the Lycra adds movement. The problem I see: if the viscose content is too high or the heat-setting temperature is wrong, the fabric can lose recovery after repeated laundering. A lower Lycra percentage with controlled knitting tension often outperforms a higher percentage that's been poorly set.

If you ask your mill for a quality package, request these numbers before production:
- Stretch and recovery per ASTM D2594 for knits or ASTM D3107 for wovens
- Shrinkage after three to five home laundry cycles
- Colorfastness to light, chlorine, and crocking
- Fiber content confirmation: Lycra brand elastane vs. generic spandex
- Seam slippage, especially for woven blends
Color is the one thing I'll use Pantone for: a fabric shade band should be within Delta E < 2 of the approved standard. Above that, even non-experts can see the difference.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: test certificates are not always generated from the exact lot you're buying. A pre-production sample can pass beautifully, while the shipped batch differs because the mill adjusted finishing parameters to hit a lower price. That's why I require a production lot sample, not just a development sample. If I'm approving a 50,000-unit order, the test report has to match the fabric that's actually in the cartons.
Lycra binding: the edge that gets ignored
Lycra binding is narrow elastic edging used on waistbands, swimwear, cuffs, and the edges of hooded baby towels. It's a small component, but it causes a lot of finished-garment failures. If a blouse is labeled silk Lycra, I'd want a care label that says "do not bleach" and "cool iron" rather than assuming the fiber will survive whatever the wearer throws at it.

Not every fabric problem is a Lycra problem. Pilling, seam puckering, color fading, and rust stains are often construction or care issues. In my audits, I've rejected fabrics that had perfect fiber content but failed because the threading wasn't matched to the seam type. A fabric panel isn't a finished garment; every step after assembly affects the final performance.
That said, elastane has limits. Repeated high-heat drying, heavy chlorine exposure, and long direct UV exposure will degrade any stretch fiber. If a garment says "do not tumble dry," it's not being overly cautious. It's protecting the same recovery that made you choose Lycra in the first place. And as of January 2025, we're asking for more data on recycled elastane options from our suppliers—not because recycled content changes visual appearance, but because it can change heat tolerance and durability. Test, don't assume.
In short: buy Lycra brands for consistency, verify recovery before price, and never judge a fabric business by the swatch alone. The best Lycra in the world won't save a poorly constructed product—and careful construction won't save a fabric that never had recovery to begin with.
