The “How Many Skeins” Problem
One of the most counterintuitive things I've learned is that quality perception is often about answering the right question—not the asked question.
People ask “how many skeins of chunky yarn for a blanket” all the time. It sounds like a math question. But a good answer starts with: what size blanket? what weight of yarn? what stitch pattern? If I say “eight skeins” and you're making a queen-size blanket with a dense stitch, you'll run out at row 40. That's not a yarn defect. It's an expectation failure. The same thing happens in fabric: a mill can meet every numeric spec and still miss the expected performance because we never aligned on what “performance” meant.
Quality perception isn't the same as quality features. Features are measurable: stretch percentage, recovery force, abrasion cycles, thread count. Perception is what the customer feels when the product does what they expected. My job is to make sure those two line up. If the spec sheet says 85% recovery and the consumer feels a permanent bag, then the spec sheet lied. It happens more often than people think.
But Isn't This Just a Premium Excuse?
I get the objection. You can make good products with generic elastane. I'm not going to stand here and say that non-branded fiber is worthless. That would be false, and honestly it would be an insult to a lot of engineers doing solid work.
But here's the thing: there's a difference between “functional” and “trustworthy.” Branded Lycra fiber doesn't exist because no one else can make stretch fiber.
