The base polymer—usually polyurethane—isn't prone to shrinking like cotton or wool. But the heat of a dryer can degrade the polymer if the fiber isn't properly stabilized. Lycra branded fiber uses a controlled production process that minimizes this, but generic elastane can vary wildly in heat tolerance.
What to ask your mill:
- What is the max recommended drying temperature for this Lycra content?
- Does the fabric meet the brand's ASTM D5591 or AATCC 135 standard for shrinkage?
- Has the fabric been pre-shrunk or relaxed before shipping?

Step 2: Run a Shrinkage Test Before Bulk Ordering
