Step 1: Identify the Real Fiber Composition
This seems obvious. It's the step I've messed up most often.
The label on a bolt might say "95% Cotton, 5% Lycra." That's not a legal description. A lycra blend must list the generic fiber name. Legally, it should say "95% Cotton, 5% Elastane (Lycra)."
Why this matters: The amount of elastane is the single biggest driver of performance. A fabric with 2% elastane has light stretch for recovery. A fabric with 10-15% elastane (often used in swimwear) has high stretch but may return poorly if the base fiber isn't right.
The surprise wasn't the price difference between suppliers. It was how much a 1% change in elastane content affected the cost and the feel.

- Release. Measure the gauge length after 30 seconds of relaxation.
- It should return to within 5% of the original 4" mark (4.2" or less). If it's more than 4.5", the recovery is poor. Expect bagging.

I once ordered polyester lycra spandex fabric for a line of swimwear, thinking it would be fine. The fabric was fine—for the first 10 swims. Then the elastane aged faster than the polyester casing, leading to a visible "crazing" effect. I should have chosen nylon.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: The elastane's lifespan is often determined by the base fiber's heat-resistance during dyeing. Nylon is processed at lower temperatures than polyester. - Abrasion Resistance (ASTM D3884): For areas of high friction, you want > 5,000 cycles with minimal pilling.
The surprise wasn't that the colors were different. It was how much more different the colors looked in side-by-side panels of stretch fabric versus non-stretch woven. The stretch pulls the dye molecules apart, subtly changing the perceived color.
Step 5: Get the Right Test Data (And Understand It)
Do not trust a single data sheet. Request the following from your supplier:

Mistake 4: Comparing prices without context. My view is that the lowest quote on lycra spandex fabric is almost never the lowest total cost. A supplier charging $8.50/yard with a 4-week lead time and known recovery issues is more expensive than a $10.00/yard supplier with a 2-week lead time and perfect data. You pay the $1.50 difference in trust and avoided delays.
That $3.00/yard savings on that first order? It cost me $4,000 in re-dos. I haven't made that mistake again.
Final Thought: The Order Before the Order
The most important step isn't on this list. It's the step you take before you place the order: order a sample of the actual production fabric. Not a sample card. Not a swatch. A cut from a production roll. That's the only way to know what you're getting.
