I coordinate fabric sourcing for a textile supplier. That means I'm the one who gets called when a mill misses a delivery or a brand suddenly needs 300 meters of something in five days. Over the past eight years, I've processed more than 200 rush orders. Some were tied to penalty clauses, some were for product launches that had already been delayed once.
These are the questions I keep answering in my own role, usually under time pressure. I hope the answers save you a panic phone call.
Is Lycra a fabric? What do we mean by 'lycra fabric'?
No, Lycra is not a fabric. It's a brand of elastane (spandex) fiber. The fiber gets blended into fabrics, and when people say 'lycra fabric' they almost always mean a base fabric such as nylon, polyester, cotton, or viscose that also contains Lycra fiber.
A typical stretch woven fabric might be 97% cotton and 3% Lycra fiber. A swimwear knit can have 20% elastane or more. The exact percentage depends on the garment and the required stretch and recovery.
To be clear, not every elastane is Lycra. Lycra is one specific branded version of elastane. Generic spandex fibers exist, but we specify Lycra when a customer needs consistent performance and a name that is recognizable on a hangtag.
Is Lycra fiber a good choice for women's pants?
Often yes, but not always. Lycra fiber works well in close-fitting pants such as leggings, jeggings, and fitted trousers. It provides stretch and, more importantly, recovery. Without recovery, those pants can bag out at the knees by lunchtime. A 2-4% Lycra fiber blend in a woven trouser is usually enough for comfort while keeping a crisp professional shape. For active leggings, you're usually looking at 5-7% elastane in a nylon or polyester knit.
That said, if you are making loose, structured trousers, you probably don't need elastane. Adding Lycra to a wide-leg wool trouser can increase cost and make the fabric harder to press. There is no universal 'lycra pants women's' answer. It depends on the fit and the fabric base.
Honestly, I recommend the non-stretch version for tailored pants unless you have a specific fit problem to solve. We've had brands pay for Lycra fiber and then complain about unwanted stretch in a fabric that never needed it.
What should we know before ordering printed Lycra fabric?
Printing on Lycra blends is not like printing on cotton. Heat kills elastane. Some print processes, especially transfer printing and heat-set curing, can push fabric above 160°C. At that point, even branded Lycra fiber can lose its elasticity. You need a process that uses lower temperatures or shorter dwell times.
In August 2024, a sportswear brand called on a Tuesday. They needed 400 meters of printed Lycra fabric for a product launch the following Monday. Normal lead time from our usual mill was 15 days. We found a mill that could do pigment printing with a cure temperature under 150°C. We paid a $650 rush premium on top of the base cost, and they delivered with 48 hours to spare. Looking back, I should have asked about the curing temperature at the RFQ stage instead of discovering it during a panic phone call.
For printed Lycra fabric, always request a strike-off and a stretch test after printing. If the fabric doesn't recover after 50% elongation, the print process likely degraded the elastane.
Can velvet contain Lycra? What about maroon velvet?
Velvet can absolutely contain Lycra fiber. You see this most often in stretch velvet for eveningwear or bodycon dresses. A typical construction uses around 3-5% elastane in the yarn, which gives the fabric two-way stretch and recovery.
Maroon velvet is a different issue. Deep shades like maroon require a lot of dye. If the velvet contains elastane, high dye temperatures or aggressive reduction clearing can degrade the Lycra fiber. That's why stretch velvet needs a supplier who knows how to control the dye cycle, not just a mill that owns a velvet loom.
Plain velvet, on the other hand, can be 100% silk, cotton, or viscose. 'Maroon velvet' does not automatically mean stretch velvet. If you need stretch, you have to specify it.
What is 'romantic bedding' and does Lycra matter here?
Romantic bedding is not a technical fabric category. I do not know why the retail world calls it that. I assume it's a marketing term for bedroom styling that uses colors like blush, sage, maroon velvet textures, ruffles, and soft drape. It's an aesthetic, not a fiber spec.
For stretch, Lycra fiber matters much less in bedding than in apparel. A fitted sheet sometimes contains a small amount of elastane to help it stay on the mattress, but most pillowcases and duvet covers do not need any stretch. If you are buying a maroon velvet throw or decorative pillows, the softness and drape matter more than elastane content.
What you will see in romantic bedding more often is rayon. Rayon gives a smooth, silky hand and soft drape that makes bedding look expensive without a luxury price tag. So when someone asks 'what material is rayon?' while shopping for bedding, the answer matters more than they expect.
What material is rayon? Is it natural or synthetic?
Rayon is a regenerated cellulosic fiber. It starts as plant material, usually wood pulp and sometimes bamboo or eucalyptus, then goes through a chemical process to dissolve the cellulose. The solution is extruded into fibers. So rayon is not a natural fiber in the same way cotton is, and it is not a fully synthetic fiber like polyester either. It sits between the two.
There are different types of rayon: regular viscose, modal, lyocell, and cupro. The 2024 Textile Exchange Preferred Fiber and Materials Market Report lists viscose rayon as one of the most produced man-made cellulosic fibers globally. That tells you it is everywhere, especially in bedding and soft clothing.
The environmental caution is real. Standard viscose production can use heavy chemical processes. If you are sourcing rayon for bedding, look for suppliers with forest certification or closed-loop processing such as lyocell. That is a more responsible choice than commodity viscose.
How do I choose between Lycra, generic elastane, and no elastane at all?
Start with the end use. If a garment needs to stretch and return to shape, activewear, swimwear, fitted pants, underwear, use elastane. If it doesn't need stretch, don't add it. Stretch fiber is not automatically a premium upgrade.
When you do need elastane, the choice between Lycra and generic spandex often comes down to quality assurance and marketing. Generic elastane can be fine. But we have seen batches where dye uptake varied, recovery degraded after a few washes, and tensile strength did not match the spec sheet. Specifying Lycra fiber reduces some of that risk because the Lycra Company maintains high quality standards and offers technical support. Whether the cost is worth it depends on your customer and the garment's performance requirements.
There is no single best answer. That's the honest version. I recommend Lycra for performance-driven products where fit and recovery are make-or-break. For a low-cost basic with minimal stretch, generic elastane might be enough. The trick is not over-specifying. We once paid for branded Lycra fiber in a woven shirt with 2% stretch and zero recovery requirement. Completely unnecessary expense. (Note to self: don't let that happen again.)
