Lycra Shorts, Linen Bedding, Velvet Dresses: What I Check Before Buying Fabric

I get asked the same question constantly: "What's the best fabric?" Clients, colleagues, even my brother-in-law at Thanksgiving. They all want a simple answer. There isn't one.

The ideal fabric for cycling shorts would fail as the front panel of a faja. The linen that makes beautiful bedding would wrinkle within an hour as a dress. That's not a knock on any fiber — it's a reminder that "best" only makes sense in context.

I'm the office administrator for a mid-size fabric sourcing company. I manage all fabric and finished-good ordering — roughly $120K annually across 15 vendors — and I report to both operations and finance. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I made preventable mistake after preventable mistake. In 2022, I ordered 500 units of cycling shorts without confirming the elastane percentage. The spec sheet said "lycra shorts cycling," and I assumed that meant premium stretch. After ten washes, they bagged out at the knees. Nobody wore them. $7,400 gone. I still kick myself for it — if I'd spent thirty seconds testing the swatch, I'd have caught the problem before the fabric ever went to cutting.

That's when I became a permanent believer in checking before committing. There's No Universal "Best" Fabric. There's "Best for Your Product."

It's tempting to think that quality is quality — that a premium fabric will work no matter what you make with it. That's not how it works. (Which, honestly, I learned the expensive way.)

Fiber composition is only the starting point. Blend percentages, weave construction, fabric density, stretch recovery, moisture behavior — all of it determines whether a fabric is right for a specific product. "Premium" alone tells you nothing about surviving industrial washing or holding compression after twenty wears.

So here are the four scenarios, what to check in each, and the judgment guide I use when I'm not sure.

Scenario 1: Lycra Shorts Cycling — Performance Is in the Percentages

Activewear brands ask me for cycling shorts constantly. The core of a good cycling short is nylon or polyester blended with elastane — and the elastane percentage is the first thing I check.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: "lycra" on a spec sheet is a brand name, not a fiber type. Lycra is a branded elastane fiber with specific quality and performance standards. A fabric labeled "spandex" or "elastane" is not automatically the same thing. That distinction matters for stretch recovery and durability — exactly where cheaper fabrics tend to fail.

What I check before ordering cycling-short fabric:

  • Elastane percentage. I spec 10-15% elastane for cycling-specific shorts. Below 10%, expect bagging at the knees. Above 15%, the garment feels like shapewear, not sportswear. It's not "more is better."
  • Stretch recovery. I ask vendors for a swatch and physically stretch it 100%, wait ten seconds, and watch it snap back. Thirty seconds. It's saved me more grief than any spec sheet.
  • Moisture management. Great recovery is wasted if the fabric traps sweat. I check for wicking finishes or certifications like Oeko-Tex and bluesign.

Scenario 2: Lycra Faja — Compression Is Not the Same as Stretch

Here's where I see the most confusion. Consumers — and honestly, some brands — assume stretch and compression are the same thing. They're not. A fabric that stretches beautifully can still fail to deliver focused, sustained compression.

Fajas require high-density fabric engineered to maintain continuous pressure. That changes your selection criteria completely.

What I check before sourcing faja fabric:

  • Fabric density. I target 280-420 GSM. Below 280, you're buying activewear, not a compression garment.
  • Compression specs. A reputable vendor should be able to provide graduated compression data. If they can't — red flag.
  • Elastane quality. Quality varies between elastane fiber suppliers. Higher-grade elastane (Lycra being one) holds compression longer through repeated wears and washes. The difference shows up around week six.

The frustrating part: brands choose cheaper fabric to protect margins, then absorb returns when the faja loses its hold. I've watched this play out three times with different clients. The fix is one phone call — ask for compression data and a wash-test sample before ordering.

Scenario 3: Pure Linen Bedding and the Rayon vs Cotton Sheets Question

Different world entirely. No stretch, no compression. Just fiber quality, weave density, and how the fabric survives repeated washing.

Pure linen bedding:

Linen is having a serious moment in hospitality and premium retail. If your client asks for it, check:

  • Weight. Quality linen bedding runs roughly 140-200 GSM. Too light feels flimsy. Too heavy feels like canvas.
  • Weave tightness. Hold the fabric to the light. If you see gaps between threads, it will pill and degrade quickly. A tight weave is non-negotiable.
  • Fiber quality. Long-staple linen is the difference between "softens with every wash" and "starts shredding in month four."

A note on expectations: pure linen shrinks and wrinkles. That's not a defect; it's a feature of the fiber — but only if your end customer knows to expect it.

Rayon vs cotton sheets:

This comparison comes up in nearly every hospitality project I work on. Here's my blunt take. Cotton sheets — especially long-staple varieties — hold up to industrial washing, breathe, and get softer over time. Rayon sheets feel silky at first and cost less, but they degrade faster under high-rotation use.

If the customer expects five years of daily-use durability, cotton wins. If it's a budget-conscious line where the customer is willing to replace sheets more frequently, rayon is a defensible choice. Just don't pretend they're the same product.

Scenario 4: Dark Green Velvet Dress — Stretch Is a Hidden Requirement

Velvet is the fabric where everyone focuses on appearance and nobody thinks about movement. Then the first customer sits down, stands up, and the dress stays crumpled.

A dark green velvet dress is a gorgeous product. But rigid velvet is not your friend.

What I check for velvet dress fabric:

  • Stretch content. I look for 3-8% elastane in velvet dress fabric. Enough to recover after sitting without distorting the velvet pile. Lycra fiber in the blend makes a real difference for all-evening wear.
  • Weight and drape. Lighter velvet (160-220 GSM) drapes and moves. Heavier velvet looks luxurious but restricts movement. Know which you need before you order.
  • Stretch direction. This is the mistake I see most often. A pattern cut against the fabric's stretch direction will never fit properly — no matter how good the elastane is. I always tell our patternmakers: verify the stretch axis before cutting.

How to Decide Which Scenario You're In

Here's the framework I use when the request doesn't fit neatly into one category:

  1. Does the garment need to move with the body? If yes, elastane percentage and recovery are non-negotiable. If no, fiber quality and weave matter more.
  2. How will the product be washed? Industrial washing destroys weak fibers. If your product faces 30+ wash cycles, prioritize durability, not novelty.
  3. What does the end customer actually value? Athletes value performance. Hotel buyers value durability. Fashion customers value appearance and comfort. The fabric choice should reflect their answer — not your vendor's best sales pitch.

I'll be honest: I still catch myself in a "premium is premium" mindset when a supplier has impressive marketing. But I've never been burned by taking five minutes to request a swatch, verify the blend ratio, and run a quick recovery test. Five minutes of verification beats five weeks of correction — especially when "correction" means an unsellable batch.

The best fabric isn't the most expensive one, or the trendiest one, or the one with the biggest brand name. It's the one you've actually checked against your product's real demands.
